In our never-ending campaign to support gals who rawk, Magneta Lane always come up on the right side of the war. ChartAttack was most pleased when we got to add them to Chart's CMW showcase. Here are a few words with singer Lexi Valentine:
So, you're about to play the big industry event that is Canadian Music Week. What's the most shameless thing you've ever done to promote your band?
Lexi Valentine: Let's see if I can come up with some new answers this year... hmmm... shameless? Nothing really. Truth is, most of the time we forget to promote. It's nice that people show up anyway.
What's the hardest part about being an up-and-coming band?
People talking shit. Sometimes people will write about things that aren't true about you. It's kind of ridiculous reading about it from time to time. As long as people stick to talking about our albums and things that are actually intriguing, then I'll be a happy Lexi.
How important is it for your band members to circulate and flirt with the audience before or after the show?
If we ever flirt, it's never planned. I guess every girl has a natural flirtatious nature about her. You can get away with murder sometimes. Kidding! But we definitely talk to fans before and after the show because it's important to meet the people that are there to see you. We can be kind of shy and quiet before the show only because we're obsessing and riled up to get on stage.
Have you ever stolen from someone else's rider? If so, who was it and what did you take?
Maybe. I don't remember. It was probably something like more veggie dip or something. I think it was Stellastar. On tour we probably took stuff from Controller.Controller because they're friends and Nirmala and company would forgive us. We don't steal their booze — just their food.
Have you ever been graded before according to ChartAttack.com's Rock 'n' Roll Report Cards?
Yes. They're fun to read. Sometimes they are kinda funny. We aim for more sexiness every year.
How did the grade make you feel? Does the idea of being graded bring back bad memories of being in elementary school or high school?
I don't remember what our last grade was like. Chart has always been really nice. It feels like we kinda get a report card every time a new album comes out anyway. In a way, that's what reviews are like... reviews are just the music industry's version of that. And when you're in a band then I guess it's part of the deal. But I'll take it if it means I can do music for a living.
Have you done anything new or interesting this week?
Yes, I guess. I try to make an effort when it comes to trying new things from time to time. I like painting a lot. I also like to listen to a lot of Spanish music. I've actually been digging a lot of new Spanish artists, and I just finished the lyrics to the last song that's gonna be on the next Magneta album.
Magneta Lane play the Horseshoe Tavern on Friday, March 7 at 8:30 p.m. as part of the annual Chart/Horseshoe/Canadian Music Week showcase.
