Charty Chart Chat: Ho Hum, Black Mountain Are Still #1 Tuesday March 25, 2008 @ 05:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
If there's one question haunting all of you, it's "Will the top 50 chart ever come down off its Black Mountain?" For the past seven weeks, Black Mountain's In The Future has effectively shielded itself from all comers and put an early lock on the #1 album of 2008 title by easily outdistancing its nearest rivals by 500 to 700 points.

This week the bridesmaid is Plants And Animals' Parc Avenue, which holds down the second position for a third consecutive week. Vampire Weekend's self-titled release experiences a quiet resurgence and moves up three places to #3. Ladyhawk's Shots remains at #4, followed by the upwardly mobile eponymous debut album by Crystal Castles, which rockets up 19 places to #5. This jump forces Cadence Weapon's Afterparty Babies down a spot to #6. Hayden's In Field & Town rises two notches to #7 while Born Ruffians' Red, Yellow And Blue tumbles five positions to #8. The surprise move of the week is the eight-place jump of the relatively unknown Beach House and their new album, Devotion. It sits at #9, fueled by top 10 placements on five important campus radio charts, including #1 on CFMU (McMaster), #2 on CHYZ (Laval), #8 on CKUT (McGill) and #9 on both CITR (UBC) and CHRW (UWO). The Raveonettes' Lust Lust Lust drops three spots to #10.
The Chart Sizzler Award goes to Destroyer's Trouble In Dreams, which enters at #21 and bests Veda Hille's This Riot Life at #26, The Dirtbombs' We Have You Surrounded at #28 and the Japandroids' independently released Lullabye Death Jams at #30. Other notable debuts include HILOTRONS' Happymatic at #36, Yoav's Charmed & Strange at #41 and Woodhands' Heart Attack at #45.
There's a bit of a March malaise hanging over a number of the specialty charts, as the number of contributors have dropped slightly — perhaps due to the NCAA men's basketball tournament south of the border. Metal, Electronic and Hip-Hop contributors are all probably riding the Cinderella stories of Western Kentucky and Villanova from last weekend, as there wasn't much new on their charts. Genghis Tron's Board Up The House still holds the top spot on the Metal/Punk chart, Cadence Weapon's Afterparty Babies remains atop Hip-Hop, as does Hot Chip's Made In The Dark on Electronic.
 Umalali: Garifuna Women's Project |
The Umalali: Garifuna Women's Project compilation races up eight spots to capture #1 on the World/Folk chart, beating out the charging Toumast's Ishumar (which debuts there at #2 and at #42 on the top 50) and perennial world favourite Toumani Diabate's The Mande Variations at #3. Joe Coughlin's Things Turn Out That Way enters the Jazz/Blues chart at #1. It beats out two former #1s: Steve Reid Ensemble's Daxaar, which rises a spot to #2; and Richard Underhill's resurgent Kensington Suite, which climbs seven spots to #3.
