Norah Jones has stepped out from behind the piano to front the roots-rock band El Madmo, who will release their self-titled debut through Team Love on May 20.
I know what you're thinking. "Norah Jones, isn't she that woman who sings soft songs that my mom likes to listen to?" The answer is yes, but sometimes she also likes to rock. You can judge for yourself by listening to "GGW," "Head In A Vise" and "The Best Part" on Team Love's website.
El Madmo are composed of Maddie (Jones) on guitar and vocals, El on bass and vocals, and Mo on drums and huge afro. While this version of Jones may seem surprising, it shouldn't be if you consider some of the artists she's collaborated with, including Foo Fighters, Bright Eyes, M. Ward, Ryan Adams and Peeping Tom. The 29-year-old also released an album with the alt.country-flavoured Little Willies in 2006.
As a solo artist, Jones has sold almost 40 million copies of her three albums around the world. She's won nine Grammy Awards.
Here are the tracks on El Madmo:
