See The Waking Eyes For Free

October 2008 Chart magazine cover stars The Waking Eyes will play a free show on Thursday at Winnipeg's Centennial Concert Hall as part of the Manitoba Music & Film Showcase.

The band will appear with many other Manitoban musicians, including Eagle & Hawk, Fresh I.E., Ray St. Germain, Bryce Pallister, Twilight Hotel, Inward Eye, Dominique Reynolds, Steve Bell, Heather Bishop, Alana Levandoski and Flo. The event will also feature films written and directed by Manitoban filmmakers.

"The aim of this event is to showcase Manitoba's outstanding and diverse film and music talent right here in our own backyard, and, right on site, educate Manitobans on how to enter and/or further develop their skills in Manitoba's film and music industries," says Manitoba Film & Music CEO Carole Vivier.

The Waking Eyes' third studio album, Holding On To Whatever It Is, was released in November. The Winnipeg band temporarily moved to Toronto from September to November to promote it. Check out video footage of their Chart photo shoot at their humble abode on "Asshole" Avenue in Etobicoke here.

Liz Powell Joins BSS

Land Of Talk's Liz Powell has officially joined Broken Social Scene.

Powell has been a de facto member of the band for a while now. She's repeatedly joined them on stage to do female vocals, since Feist, Stars' Amy Millan and Metric's Emily Haines are often unavailable for shows.

"As some of you may know I happily joined the ranks of the Broken Social Scene," Powell wrote in a Dec. 26 MySpace blog entry. "A soft light has broken inside me since entering the their realm.

"thank you Brendan, Kevin, Heidi, Sammy, Andrew, Charlie, Justin, Leon, Marty, Brody, Angus, Scheid, Robyn, and Brandy for taking such good care of me in all my insecure, excited, tired, bold, passionate, and burnt-out states.

"Being a member of great band is a great thing for me in itself, but finding friends in that same band is a beautiful bonus. thanks is all i have."

Powell played a show at Toronto's Sound Academy with BSS before she headed to Europe with her own outfit, Land Of Talk. The band played a 12-day tour with openers Think About Life before returning to Canada.

It's unlikely you'll see Powell with Broken Social Scene or Land Of Talk too much in the near future (at least in the first part of 2009), since she's having voice surgery at the end of this month. It's unclear if the operation is linked to Powell's loss of voice last year. In any case, it's forced Land Of Talk to cancel all their upcoming dates with the exception of these three with Little Scream:

Get Two Free Acorn EPs

The Acorn have made two online only EPs available for free download through their website.

The Ear Worms and Little Elms EPs run a collected 10 minutes. The four-song Little Elms was written earlier this fall and recorded over the holidays. Ear Worms was written and recorded during the same time and, according to frontman Rolf Klausener, it features "12, thirty-second songs inspired by the myriad of friendships and experiences I've been blessed with this year."

The Acorn were recently added to this year's All Tomorrow's Parties Festival along with Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean's The Pink Mountaintops side project, Health and Shearwater. The festival will take place from May 15 to 17 at the Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, England and will be curated by The Breeders.

Pet Shop Boys Say Yes

Veteran British electronic dance act Pet Shop Boys will release a new studio album titled Yes in late March.

The 11-track, 48-minute follow-up to 2006's Fundamental was produced by Brian Higgins/Xenomania, who also co-wrote three songs, including lead single "Love Etc." Pet Shop Boys received a songwriting contribution from 19th century classical music composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on "All Over The World."

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe will receive the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at the Brit Awards, which will be held on Feb. 18 at London's Earls Court. The group, who've sold more than 50 million records since 1985, will also perform on the show.

The Creepshow Announce Canadian Tour

The Creepshow will play Canadian shows before and after they head south to the U.S. for a few shows next month.

Singer/guitarist Sarah Sin, bassist Sickboy, keyboardist The Reverend McGinty and drummer Matt Pomade will then go to Europe for dates in Germany and Austria in May. All the gigs are in support of last year's Run For Your Life.

Women Plot European Tour

Women will embark on a European tour in February.

The Calgary band will head to the U.K. after playing shows in their hometown and Edmonton this month. From there, they'll gig through Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain in support of their Chad VanGaalen-produced, self-titled debut, which came out last year. Some of the shows will be headlining gigs, while others will see them playing with The Soft Pack (formerly The Muslims), Constantines, The War On Drugs and Deerhunter.

Gallagher Brothers Start Facebook War

Oasis' Noel and Liam Gallagher are known for their public brawls and feuds, and this time they've started one online.

Both Gallagher brothers have Facebook accounts (no, we don't know the URLs, nor would we tell you if we did). If you've ever left Facebook's auto-login active or forgot to sign out of it and had someone fuck around with your Facebook status as a result, you might know how Liam feels.

According to Britain's Daily Star tabloid, he forgot to sign out of his Facebook account, only to have brother Noel change his Facebook status to "Liam Gallagher has lost his forehead and gained a six-head."

This made Liam so angry that he deleted his Facebook profile.

No Courtney Love Album, Just Blogging

Courtney Love (and the "Head Administrator of her Myspace") has been blogging again, but babbling would be an equally appropriate term.

Love's most recent MySpace blog post on Jan. 3 addresses an "unusual acoustic problem" in the mixing and mastering of her new album, which has contributed to its delayed release. Love had written in the January issue of Elle magazine's U.K. issue that Nobody's Daughter would be released on her website on Jan. 1. She emphasizes that any tracks that have leaked online aren't on the forthcoming LP.

Love also talks about the alleged $200 million that's been embezzled from her late husband Kurt Cobain's estate by someone fraudulently using his social security number. While she criticizes websites devoted to attacking her, she gushes about how learning how to sew, dye, crochet and embroider have changed her life. She ends the post by nominating Whoopi Goldberg as one of the "top 5 coolest people on the planet."

A day earlier, the aforementioned MySpace head administrator rambled about how "smashing" Nobody's Daughter is and how Love is "sober, clean, classy and very elegant and sophisticated and super intelligent." The administrator also claims that "Courtney has 30 million dollars in sponsorships, from a prominent feminine hygiene/menstrual company and a prominent tequila company ??? and Courtney doesn't even understand that part! and many more companies etc."

That same day, Love went into more excruciating detail about being victimized by embezzlement and identity theft. Good luck trying to decipher what the hell she's saying.

Love spent Christmas Eve composing three lengthy blog posts, but my eyes were too tired and sore to get through them after scanning her other musings. Only the truly brave or bored would dare make the attempt.

Tegan And Sara Plan Books, Album

Tegan And Sara will publish three books this spring.

The Quin sisters are working on the books with photographers Ryan Russell and Lindsey Byrnes. Emy Storey, who designed the cover of Tegan And Sara's 2007 album The Con, is working on the layout for all the books.

The Quin twins also look set to hit the recording studio soon. Tegan And Sara wrote songs together for the first time in New Orleans at the beginning of December. Photographs from those songwriting sessions will be included in the upcoming books.

"Sara and I just sent 40 songs to Chris Walla and are making plans to record our new record this spring!" Tegan wrote in a Dec. 24 MySpace blog entry. "We can't wait for you to hear what we've been up to!"

Tegan And Sara's still untitled sixth studio album is tentatively scheduled for a fall release.

The Dears To Play Mexico

The Dears will head to Mexico at the beginning of February for shows in Guadalajara and Mexico City.

The Dears played some of the craziest shows of their lives the last time they visited the country. It seems that all those Latino Morrissey fans are more than happy to show just as much love to Moz's chocolate brother.

The gigs will come two weeks after the band play a benefit show for the Every Kid Choir in their hometown of Montreal.

All the shows are in support of last year's Missiles. The disc is Murray Lightburn (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Natalia Yanchak's (keyboards, vocals) first with their new lineup, which includes Kill The Lights' Yann Geoffroy (drums, keyboards), Jason Kent (guitar, vocals, keyboards), former Land Of Talk member Christopher McCarron (guitar) and Pony Up's Lisa Smith (bass, keyboards) and Laura Wills (keyboards, vocals).

Two Hours Traffic Get Camped Out

Two Hours Traffic's "Stuck For The Summer" will be used as the theme to MTV's Camped Out television series.

The reality series, which only airs south of the border right now, chronicles life at six summer camps — including a sleep-away camp, a cheerleading camp and an arts camp.

Two Hours Traffic have launched a new mobile website, m.twohourstraffic.com, to celebrate. Visitors can sign up for the band's alert program, which will give them access to the Two Hours Traffic mobile site through SMS, news alerts from the band and occasional free exclusive mobile content.

Two Hours Traffic finished an incredibly successful 2008 with a hometown New Year's Eve show at Charlottetown's The Wave. The year saw the band play shows throughout Canada, and 2007's Little Jabs was shortlisted for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize.

Two Hours Traffic will begin recording its follow-up at the end of February. They're currently working on material for the new album with Little Jabs producer Joel Plaskett, according to a Dec. 17 MySpace blog entry. Potential titles for the disc include Giraffe Skateboard, The Teen Commandments and Monkey Business.

Black Lungs Announce Shows

Alexisonfire guitarist Wade MacNeil's Black Lungs side project will play shows with Ceremonial Snips in Peterborough, Hamilton, London and Toronto later this month.

MacNeil "will be bringing along a crew of friends to join him on stage" at the shows, according to a Jan. 2 MySpace blog entry. More Black Lungs lineup information will be available shortly, and you can buy tickets now.

MacNeil has been hard at work with Alexisonfire, who are working on their fourth album. It's tentatively titled Young Cardinals and should be out sometime this year. Alexisonfire will begin recording the disc in February.

Vocalist George Pettit recently told View Magazine that the album is "a lot more guitar driven" than anything the band have done to date. The title was influenced by nature.

"I was writing and watching the news while America had its flooding, massive wildfires and it was just a terrible moment on the television," Pettit told the magazine. "I ended up on my balcony where there is this big cherry tree in the yard with all these cardinals in it. It just kind of summed up a day that was filled with turmoil because nature is still completely oblivious to all of our hardships.

"The sentiment of it was that life is as equally terrifying and horrible as it is beautiful and wondrous."

ICP Member Sued For Throwing Bottle

Insane Clown Posse member Violent J apparently lived up to his name and is being sued by a fan who claims that the rapper hit him in the eye with an unopened two-litre bottle of pop that was allegedly thrown into the crowd at a June 2007 concert in Fargo, N.D.

True ICP fans, who call themselves Juggalos, should know enough to be on the lookout for flying Faygo bottles at concerts by their clown-faced rap heroes. Not knowing bottles are going to fly into the audience at an ICP show is like not knowing you're going to get fake blood on you at a Gwar show, or syphilis at a Fall Out Boy show.

But it seems John Antonelli's devotion isn't as hardcore as others, as he's seeking at least $50,000 in damages in a lawsuit filed against Violent J (real name Joseph Bruce) and Playmakers, the venue where the incident occurred, which is now known as The Hub.

The suit claims Violent J was negligent because he threw the bottle without warning, and the club was negligent because it didn't provide sufficient security. Antonelli suffered a fracture to a bone near his right eye after he was hit.

A response from Playmakers agreed that Violent J threw the bottle into the crowd and injured Antonelli, but states that the rapper alone is to blame. Violent J hasn't responded to the suit.

The case is expected to go to trial in July if a settlement isn't reached beforehand.

Violent J was accused of repeatedly hitting a fan with a microphone at a 1997 concert in New Mexico. Violent J and musical partner Shaggy 2 Dope (real name Joseph Utsler) were fined $200 each a year later for getting into a fight with a customer at an Indiana Waffle House, making them role models for a fellow Michigan artist: rock-rapper Kid Rock.

Insane Clown Posse enjoyed their biggest success in the '90s and have sold more than 6.5 million albums in the U.S. and Canada since the release of their Carnival Of Carnage debut in 1992. Their last album, The Tempest, came out in 2007.

Influential Keithley's Widespread Touring With D.O.A.

D.O.A. frontman Joey "Shithead" Keithley has been named the most influential British Columbian of all time in an online poll conducted by The Vancouver Sun newspaper.

Keithley received 2,912 votes (including 843 from a single IP address), which put him 1,200 votes ahead of second-place finisher Terry Fox. More than 31,300 votes were cast for the 219 nominees, and many of the musical folks on the list performed well. Joni Mitchell finished ninth, Nelly Furtado 11th, Michael Buble 12th, David Foster 13th, Bryan Adams 16th, Diana Krall 30th, Randy Bachman 34th and Ben Heppner 95th

D.O.A., who celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2008, will play five shows in China this month before they return to North America for shows in Washington and Oregon. They'll head to Europe in April for concerts in France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. All the shows are in support of last year's Northern Avenger.

Katy Perry And Travis McCoy Split

Katy Perry sang that she kissed a girl and liked it, but she apparently wasn't enjoying kissing Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy anymore, since the two broke up at the end of 2008.

"A source close to the couple" told usweeklymagazine.com that Perry and McCoy had split before the end of the year, and Perry's fame is to blame.

"It's sad, but they were fighting a lot because they never saw each other, and now she is going on tour," the source said. "She just needed a clear head. It's been nonstop work for her."

In a Dec. 31 blog post, McCoy posted the lyrics to Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door," which contains the verse: "We fight every night, now that's not kosher/I reminisce with bliss of when we was closer/And wake up to be greeted by an argument again/You act like you're ten."

McCoy posted a picture of himself with a new laptop in another post the same day, in which he wrote: "My Laptop is my new bitch. LOYAL. LISTENS. and NEVER LET'S ME DOWN."

Rumours that Perry and McCoy were engaged surfaced in late 2008. Perry promptly denied the rumours to Us Magazine.

"Planning a wedding and promoting a record — those two things don't exist in the same sentence," she told Us. "You just have to enjoy each other because people change, you know."
