Scrappy Bitch Tour
September 17, 1999
The Opera House, Toronto
I have to admit, that before I attended this show I didn't know too much
about Kinnie Starr or the whole "Scrappy Bitch Tour" goings-on, but I
learned quickly. I walked into the Opera House at about 8:45pm thinking that
the place was a little emptier than I had expected, but it filled up fast.
Kinnie went on at about 10:00pm, and broke into a spoken word poem called
"Buttons" from her second album Tidy. Although the crowd seemed to be just a
little too quiet, just a little too subdued, they couldn't stay that way for
long. She decided to come right out onto the floor to get a little more
personal with her audience.
The energy that Kinnie Starr washed over
her fans and was contagious. Next, she sang a song called "Simplicity" from
her upcoming album Mending. It had a groovy sort of hip-hop feel that left everyone
bobbing their heads to the beat.
At one point, Veda Hille and Oh Suzanna
joined Kinnie on stage for a song called "Pond Scum". The three worked
together really well to make the harmonies happen. The last song that was
performed by Kinnie was called "Praise", but not before she sang "Boys
Percent 23" a song that she was inspired to write by her little brother's
snowboarding hat.
All of the girls seemed to have a great time throughout
the show, and that made everyone that went to see them have a good time as
well. Veda Hille was on next, and the show wound down a little and took a more
spiritual feel. She switched between a four string electric guitar and
keyboards. Oh Suzanna continued to close a great show.
